Where else but in San Luis Obispo would you find a “Bubblegum Alley”?
What exactly is Bubblegum Alley? Exactly what it sounds like: an alley filled street to building top with previously chewed bubblegum! The 15 ft. high by 70 foot long alley is lined with bubblegum of every color imaginable. The alley is located on the 700 block of Higuera Street in downtown San Luis Obispo.
No one is quite sure when the tradition began, although some think is started after WWII as a San Luis Obispo High School Graduating class event. Others think it started in the 1950’s as a rivalry between San Luis Obispo High and Cal Poly. At any rate, the wall continues to grow as modern day enthusiasts continue to contribute to the wall. A visit to Downtown San Luis Obispo is not complete without a visit to this special attraction.
