Most visitors are unaware, but San Luis Obispo Olive Oil is quite an industry!
Over the last 15 years thousands of acres of olives have been planted for the purpose of making San Luis Obispo County olive oil. Guess it turns out that the climate for growing wine grapes is very similar to that needed for growing olives! So, among the many acres of vineyards in San Luis Obispo County you are certain to find acres of olives.
A few of my favorite farms are (1) Kiler Ridge Olive Farm; (2) Pasolivo Olive Farm; and (3) Tiber Canyon Olive Farm. The first two farms are in the Northern part of San Luis Obispo County, and the third is located in South San Luis Obispo County. Stop by any of these places and you’ll be treated to a tasting of the oils produced by that farm. There are usually three or four oils to taste; although, at Pasolivo you’ll find nine!
In addition to the extra virgin oils, you’ll likely find flavored oils as well. It helps to pay attention to how the flavors get into the olive oil: was the fruit added as a whole… was it infused… or were botanical oils added to the finished product. You’ll find each tastes differently.
